Don’t get me wrong, we’ve had our fair share of mom-daughter fights, but since I went off to college, Mom and I have become really close. She doesn’t try to be the cool mom, the best-friend mom, but she is all of that and more. I just shake my head, the smile still on my face. “There’s a bottle of Fireball under the seat. You’re making me feel old, kid,” she says, taking her eyes off the road for a few seconds to look at me. “Less than one month until my baby graduates college and she’s old enough to drink. “Mom!” I exclaim, turning to her with wide eyes. All the asshole owner has to do is prove there is food, water, and shelter and lie through their teeth about how the horse got in that terrible condition. Yeah, there are laws against animal cruelty, but things aren’t black and white. To give them hope.Īnd also, more times than not, we’re sneaking in and stealing. More times than not, when we get to them, when I climb a fence or run across a forgotten pasture and look into their eyes, they know. Getting them away from hell and into the trailer isn’t easy. My main concern is always for the horses, the poor pitiful animals that had been beaten, starved, and neglected within inches of their lives. I reach up and pull on the necklace around my neck, a little silver horse on a thin chain. “And not if we don’t want to get pulled over.” I look back down at the photo of the emaciated horses. “We’re making good time,” she says but doesn’t look at me, doesn’t give me her trademark smile that causes little wrinkles to form around her lips. She pushes her blonde hair back and nods. Mom drums her fingers on the steering wheel of the truck.

“Do you think we’ll get there in time?” I ask, flicking my eyes back down to the glowing screen in my hand. I inhale and look out the window, unable to get the image out of my mind.

Chipped gray nail polish slides across the screen as I look at the next. I flip through the photos on my phone, abhorrence growing with each swipe of my finger. I wouldn’t have been able to write this book without your help. (All are unrelated standalones with no reading order required)
